Motion Twin and Evil Empire have concluded work on Dead Cells just as they said they would, with the release of Update 35, otherwise known as The End is Near.

Update 35 brings “an array of new weapons and legendary affixes” to players on both PC and console. As part of this free update, players will encounter new enemies, weapons, and there are more than 40 (!) new head customisations included, too.

The new mobs are called: The Sore Loser, Curser and Doom Bringer, and they can all “appear in any biome if your Boss Cells level is high enough.” They sound challenging, but we’re getting new tools to tackle this cursed late-game threat.

The new weapons are called “Misericorde and Anathema”, both of which deal big damage but also give you curses to ponder, as do the new mutations (the Cursed Flask, Damned Vigor and Demonic Strength), which EE and Motion Twin promise will “mix up your runs even further with some of the game’s highest risk vs. reward builds.”

Full patch notes can be found right here.

Evil Empire chief Steve Filby wrote: “I joined Motion Twin in 2014 and started working on Dead Cells in various forms from my first day. I never would have believed that ten years later I’d be writing a final farewell… Hell when we launched the game, I wasn’t even sure people would like it.

“From Motion Twin to Evil Empire, it’s been a privilege and a pleasure to contribute to the game, work with the community, and onboard new teammates to the adventure. So long Dead Cells, I think I’ll just start one more run before I go…”

The above relates to the PC and console versions of the game, however, the iOS and Android builds have a different update cadence. Update 34, Clean Cut, is still yet to grace mobile devices, so fans have that and The End is Near still to come, hopefully later this year.

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
