If you’re eager to roll those proverbial sleeves up and play a newly announced game, Amazing Slot Survivor (A.S.S.) is here to tempt you in with its strange name and even stranger presentation. That’s right, Dear Reader, it’s about to get weird…

Developed by TwoMenGames, this isometric/third-person bullet heaven takes notes from Megabonk in particular and then serves up its own brand of tongue-in-cheek video game satire. At least, I think it’s satire..?

The game is due to land on PC (Win) on November 13, but as of today, there’s a playtest up and running, so you can try the game if you like the sound of it. According to a blog post on the game’s Steam page, the playtest is running until September 30, so get a move on if you’re interested.

As for me, I had a little look and definitely noted the Megabonk inspiration. I also noticed a bit of screen tearing, and with no V-Sync option in the demo options, I just had to try my best to ignore it. Not a major issue, but an issue nonetheless.

In terms of the visuals, it’s an interesting game. There’s a jarring dissonance between aspects of the visual design, but I think that’s also kinda the point. Amazing Slot Survivor is built using Unreal Engine so it looks good, and there’s a pleasing feel to exploration.

The player character is strange-looking, sure, but also well realised and even thought-provoking given the genre in question. Juxtaposed with that is the brashness of the game’s casino theme and its bold iconography. They feel almost smashed together, but there’s also something meta bubbling under the surface.

Amazing Slot Survivor (A.S.S.) is certainly an interesting game with a point to make, and it delivers it via some ironic and distinctive visuals. Otherwise, this is a fairly traditional bullet heaven that borrows a lot of ideas from one of last year’s best games, Megabonk. Consider me intrigued!
