Monster Cuisine is the name of a new game that was announced this week, and as part of the big reveal, developer Team Machiavelli has launched a playtest so that eager monster hunters can have a taste of the game ahead of its planned launch, whenever that may be.

The newly published Monster Cuisine Steam page confirms a few key details, including the game’s core loop. If you ask me, it sounds a bit like Dave the Diver, as the monsters you hunt in one part of the game then appear in the dishes you serve in your fantasy tavern.

The pixel art looks pretty cute, as you can see in the embedded trailer, and the full game has five biomes to explore and lots of different monsters to kill and then cook. It also sounds like there’s going to be a tavern full of strange characters and lots of mini-games to work through for them.

While it doesn’t claim to be a roguelike in any of the materials I’ve looked at for the game, I think Monster Cuisine sounds adjacent enough for it to be of interest to some of you fine folks. Let me know if you decide to check it out!

Still with me? Of course you are! If you want to keep reading about great hand-picked roguelikes, this website is absolutely chock-full of them. Head over to the Guides Page for a concentrated hit of roguish games, organised via sub-genre and platform.

What’s more, there are always going to be new lists for emerging trends as well as fresh titles to highlight. This is because my backlog is embarrassingly long, and so I’m always trying to balance the new games that arrive in my inbox with playing the stuff I already have.
