Any day you get new Vampire Survivors content is a good day, on that I think we can all agree. Well, it just so happens that today (well, October 19 if you want to embrace pedantry) is such a day.

That’s because those lovely souls over at Poncle have finally dropped the latest major content update, bringing the game up to the heady heights of version 1.7.0.

Best of all, they’re not even charging for this one, which given their current modest pricing structure, feels most generous indeed. Here’s what we’ve just been given in the wintery new Whiteout Update:

  • 6 new EXTRA achievements
  • 1 new Bonus stage
  • 2 new relics to get a new PowerUp and morph an existing character
  • 1 new weapon with its evolution
  • 1 new playable character
  • 1 new music track

I have to say, I enjoyed the tongue-in-check trailer that landed alongside the content drop, so I’ve added that below for your viewing pleasure. Have a watch and meet me on the other side, yeah?

Naturally, the headline features are the new map and the fresh face being added to the roster. She-Moon Eeta is the new character and she starts with the new weapon, the Glass Fandango. Poncle describes her as “slightly defensive” and

Whiteout is a 20-minute bonus stage, and it doesn’t sound too complicated to access for seasoned players to access. For details on that and more there are notes on the game’s Steam page, but they’ve been redacted on the site and so I won’t spoil them here.

On the other hand, if all you want is the basic tweaks and fixes, and the act of clicking away to a different site feels too painful to contemplate, you can see the update log for version 1.7.0 below.

Before that, however, I think it’s also worth directing your attention to the news that the game’s upcoming Adventure Mode is “less than a month away”. Great news if you’re looking forward to even more ways to play the game!

The newest character added to Vampire Survivors smashes dozens of enemy monsters.

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
