Update: Evil Empire has now rolled out the Paws & Claws update for Brotato on PC (it’s expected to follow shortly on consoles and mobile).

You can find the full patch notes here, and the shiny new trailer for the Paws & Claws update can be watched below:

Original: Brotato was already among our favourite Survivors-likes, but developer Evil Empire has now raised the bar by adding pets in an all-new update as the dev takes control of the game.

The upcoming Paws & Claws update adds eight new companions that can join you on runs to help you survive incoming alien hordes. Each pet is designed to complement different build types and must be unlocked by completing specific conditions, as detailed below:

  • Bonk Dog: Equip at least 6 weapons that scale with Melee Damage.
  • Catling Gun: Equip at least 6 weapons that scale with Ranged Damage.
  • Bot-O-Mine: Equip at least 6 weapons that scale with Engineering.
  • Blazemander: Equip at least 6 weapons that scale with Elemental Damage.
  • Doc Moth: Reach at least 10 HP Regeneration and +10% Life Steal in the same run.
  • Lootworm: Leave at least 20 materials on the ground at the end of a wave.
  • Jellyshield: Get hit by 3 enemy projectiles in one wave.
  • Scapegoat: Win a run with Beast Master.

Another playable character, known as the Beast Master, has also been added as part of the update. The Beast Master fights exclusively using pets, ditching traditional weapons entirely. To unlock the Beast Master, players must first obtain the Bonk Dog, Catling Gun, Bot-O-Mine, Blazemander, and Lootworm.

Whilst we don’t know the exact release date for the Paws & Claws update, an open beta is now live on Steam. One important thing worth noting is that the update is currently only available in English.

Brotato has long been a standout Survivors-like for us here at Rogueliker, with Mike even including it in his round-up of the Best Roguelikes of 2023. You can also find his full review of the game here.

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
