Hey you lovely lot. I’m sorry for being quiet on the roguelike front, but (trigger warning) I’m sure you’ll understand when I tell you that I’m still reeling from the loss of my dear old dad a few weeks ago, and I’m finding it difficult to stay on task. As such, normal service has yet to resume as I continue work through my shit, but please know that I have big plans for Rogueliker in 2025 and beyond, so stick around for all the latest roguishness, as well as one or two wild opinions. Anyway, I digress…

The slightly revised format for Gone Rogue continues, as I look to put a bit more distance between each instalment, as well as skipping a few of the less polished releases I encounter. That said, I’m still very much trying to signal boost undiscovered gems so head over to the monthly round-up for a more personal and curated list. Stick around here for an in-depth dive into the roguelike release schedule over the past couple of weeks, across PC and console, minus any sleazy porn games or anything that looks a bit too undercooked.

Normally I would use this paragraph to tell you about any games I’ve purchased or covered via codes provided, but given recent events, I’ve not played much of anything this year. I can only note that I would like to write more about Sworn, Reality Break, Astral Throne, Robobeat and Rift Wizard 2, and I will aim to cover them all as soon as I can. Kinix, meanwhile, has his eyes on Everwarder, so expect his thoughts on that one in due course, too.

I have already written about a couple of games featured below, including Rogue Waters, the turn-based pirate game, Achilles: Survivor, and the brilliant Luck be a Landlord. This round-up is also footed by the new Kindgoms mode for Darkest Dungeon 2, which I’ve managed to spend some time with this week. For what it’s worth, I also quite like the look of Cryptical Path, and as a lapsed archer, I couldn’t resist picking up Arrogue, although I’ve not played it yet.

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
