Darkest Dungeon 2 has just been updated with two new playable characters and a number of additional tweaks and changes, with Red Hook confirming the news with a trailer and a couple of new tidbits.

The new expansion, The Binding Blade, costs USD 9.99 / 9,75 EUR / 8.50 GBP and is available on both Steam and Epic Games Store.

In the press release that dropped today, the main points that were covered below were reiterated, however, we did get a nice dev quote that confirms that the Crusader is getting their own special unlock mission, and we’re promised playable flashback encounters.

“The continued support for the Crusader from our community got us excited to bring this fan-favourite back,” wrote Red Hook Studios creative director Chris Bourassa, teasing us in with tales of former glory.

“His updated design looks great, his skills are impactful, and his specialization paths provide a ton of strategic variety. But we wanted to go the extra mile and honor his status amongst our players, so we created a unique in-game experience to celebrate his addition to the roster.”

Consider me thoroughly intrigued. Anyway, have a launch trailer.

Red Hook Studios today announced the first major DLC for Darkest Dungeon II. It’s called The Binding Blade and it’s landing on December 11.

The expansion is going to include two new playable characters, The Duelist and The Crusader. The studio included a bunch of details in the presser, and I’ve pulled out the most interesting bits below.

The Duelist is the new face, and they’re capable of switching between Defensive and Aggressive stances, making them quite well-rounded by all accounts. They can ignore enemy defenses and strike back with Riposte. Sounds spikey!

The Crusader is returning to action as an indispensable front rank hero, withstanding punishing blows for his team. He supports with healing and stress recovery, as well as being able to strike down his opponents with his righteous blade.

Finally, the DLC is adding a new roaming mini-boss that goes by the name The Warlord. You’ll encounter him on your hellish roadtrip to stop the apocalypse, so watch out!

Update: The Binding Blade is releasing on December 11, and will cost $9.99 USD. For that payment in gold, you’ll get two new heroes with full playable backstories and a special unlock quest, plus a new wandering mini-boss to encounter. Here’s the official spiel about the two classes, from Steam.

The Duelist is a disciplined and deadly combatant capable of tactically switching between Defensive and Aggressive stances. She is able to move between ranks with ease, attacking from both the front and back ranks, dispatching her enemies with brutal efficiency.

The Crusader has returned! This battle hardened knight is fueled by a radiant Holy fire and will Smite his foes where they stand.

The Warlord – a roaming mini-boss who can be found on your journey to the Mountain.

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
