This is a most happy day indeed, as I just learned that the hellspawn of DRL (the unofficial roguelike based on Doom) is returning in the form of Jupiter Hell Classic. Rip and tear, people, rip and tear…
The game’s developer, ChaosForge, summed it up as succinctly as possible, with the following line, describing it as “the demake of a remake of a roguelike unmake of a famous 1993 FPS shooter.” If you’re a little bit confused by that, please allow me to explain.
Doom, the iconic shooter of the ’90s, was made into a roguelike. This turn-based demon-fest was eventually renamed as DRL because lawyers. ChaosForge then took DRL and remade it as the excellent Jupiter Hell, a fast-paced roguelike with unique movement, tons of atmosphere, and no legal connection to a certain id shooter.

Now, using the learnings from Jupiter Hell, we’re getting a demake with pixel graphics and lots of shotguns called Jupiter Hell Classic. Just look at the screenshot above… it looks so cute yet so violent.
This lovely-looking pixel-art gore-fest is due out later this year, and I can’t bloody wait because I love Doom. Not only that, but I also thought that Jupiter Hell was pretty special, too (I should also mention that at the time of writing it’s heavily discounted).
The original DRL is going to keep getting updates and remains free-to-play over on the ChaosForge website, but if you want to wishlist Jupiter Hell Classic, head over to Steam and do the deed. Before you click away, however, behold the trailer!
