Rift of the NecroDancer is the new lane-based rhythm game spinoff of the classic 2015 roguelike Crypt of the NecroDancer. It only makes sense that Brace Yourself Games would try making a more traditional rhythm game eventually.

Rift is exactly what you’d expect from a NecroDancer spinoff, with the usual hallmarks of good music, simple controls, and challenging gameplay.

Beat-ing up Monsters

The main thing that sets Rift apart from all the other rhythm games I’ve played is that it replaces the usual beat tiles with various monsters instead.

Not only are you keeping track of which keys to hit, but simultaneously you’re reading enemies’ behaviours. There are bats that move lanes each hit, zombies that warp diagonally down the track, and harpies that pause before dashing forward. It can get a little overwhelming at times, but it’s this unique approach to beat patterns that makes it so different.

Fortunately, if you have prior experience with Crypt of the NecroDancer, enemies largely behave the same here so the onboarding is a lot easier. Brand new players might struggle to get the hang of things however.

Albums’ Worth of Songs

Rift of the NecroDancer has a ton of content to play around with including four difficulties, 30+ tracks, and a few different game modes.

There’s a Story Mode featuring basic visual novel cutscenes and cute mini-games between standard charts. Additionally there is a Remix Mode that randomizes the enemies and patterns that appear. Workshop support is also included with a level editor and custom track support.

Unlike Crypt’s soundtrack, Rift’s was initially a little off-putting and not what I expected, but most of the songs are so catchy they’ve grown on me. Compared to the fast paced EDM of the original game, a lot of the list is a bit jazzier and softer this time around, which does fit the relaxed theming of the visuals really well.

Fantastic Remix

I had a ton of fun with Rift of the NecroDancer and I am excited for its future with custom tracks and daily challenges. There is a ton of fun to be had here for new and veteran NecroDancer fans alike!

Rift of the NecroDancer is out on February 5th on PC (Win) and the Switch. Thank you to Brace Yourself Games for the review code!

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
