You wait ages for a decent artistic roguelike to come along, and then two turn up at the same time.

The game I’m talking about right now is Vellum, and it was announced yesterday. It’s a cooperative action roguelike due to land on Steam at some point in 2024. (They call it a roguelike but it sounds like it could be a roguelite, so we’ll see.)

The other game is Realm of Ink.

Back to Vellum: there’s a lot of lore in the presser to unpack. Players will be taking on the role of Scribes, and then they’ll be going up against “the dreaded Torn, an ever-encroaching enemy that feeds on renowned fables and stories.”

A player casts a spell, striking an enemy in the distance with a giant purple ball of energy.

A twist on the roguish formula

What sounds really spicy is that in Vellum, players have to pick how their enemies get stronger. There are 100 so-called Torn Pages to pick from, and it sounds like you’ll be able to balance your opponents’ strengths against your own in a bunch of interesting ways.

It’s a roguelike so that means ultimates and signature powers, with more than “70 possible loadout combinations” promised. That’s alongside 300+ Scrolls of Power, and a “mystical Ink Font” that teams can use in combination with individual builds.

Players will be able to team up in groups of up to four, which certainly sounds like it’ll work in the promised 30-minute gameplay bursts.

Vellum’s release date

As mentioned up top, the game is due to land on Steam at some point in 2024.

That’s a bit vague though, and the “coming soon” written on the store listing isn’t much help either. Alas I couldn’t find anything else on my trawl through their social channels, but I’ll keep you updated here.

In the meantime, you can head over to the game’s Steam page and do the Wishlisting thing, should you so wish. You can also check out the announcement trailer below.

Update: Vellum is coming to Early Access on PC on March 8th. For all the latest, including new information about the developer’s console plans, hit the link.

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
